What is There to do at Ham Orchards? Here are 5 Things I Like!

If you find yourself in the North Texas area during the summer you will want to check out Ham Orchards. Ham Orchards is a family owned orchard in Terrell, Texas that began its journey starting from the year 1979. The orchard is open from mid May to mid August and you can check their website or Facebook page for more up to date days as those months approach. Because the opening and closing dates change from year to year, you will want to check and see if they are open before you go. The days and times you can visit are Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm. If you choose to spend your day at the orchard during one of these times you are in for a treat. Here is a list of some of the top things I recommend you try when you go…

1. TRY THE PEACH BBQ BY EDDIE DEEN

Whether you are a barbecue lover or not, you have to try the peach BBQ by Eddie Deen. It is such a unique type of BBQ. Although this is not the only option on the menu, in my opinion it comes in at #1. The sandwich itself can be ordered à la carte or in a combo meal. The BBQ sandwich comes served on one of the softest buns you have ever tried and when you make it a meal you get to try one of the delicious sides as well. Some of the side options include baked beans, coleslaw, chips or potato salad. Don’t forget to finish off your order with a drink (I highly recommend trying the peach tea) and some peach pickles. Yes, I said peach pickles! You HAVE to give them a try not only on their own but also on your sandwich! I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Once you have placed your order, they will hand you your food right there at the walk up window and you can head out to find your table. There is a small condiment and drink room where you can stop by and grab what you need. Here you will find soft drinks as well as varying types of tea. There are also sandwich toppings like those peach pickles I mentioned above.

2. GRAB SOME PEACH ICE CREAM INSIDE THE MARKET

A trip to Ham Orchards is not complete without grabbing some peach ice cream from the market. It’s delicious! When you order a cone or cup of ice cream you might be amazed by its size. My family usually buys one, asks for an extra cup and splits it between two people. IT’S SO GOOD! It is a wonderful treat on a hot summer day. If you prefer, they also have strawberry flavored ice cream or you can get a mix of both strawberry and peach. So, grab your ice cream and then go do the next thing on this list – sit and relax in the rocking chairs.

3. SIT AND RELAX IN THE ROCKING CHAIRS

Along one side of the covered eating area is a line of wooden rocking chairs inviting visitors to come sit down. I highly recommend taking a little time to just sit back, relax and take in the scenery in front of you. It can be very relaxing. On occasion, you might also see one of the many trains that pass by on the nearby train tracks. On busier days, these rocking chairs can fill up. Thankfully if you wait just a bit, usually one or two will open up and you can give them a try.

4. PICK BLACKBERRIES IN THE BLACKBERRY PATCH

If you can visit Ham Orchards early in the season (usually within the first month of opening), there is a blackberry patch open to those who want to pick berries themselves. Ham Orchards provides the buckets to purchase and then you will also pay for what you pick. After you finish you will want to keep your bucket because you can bring it back each year and use it again. On occasion, the berry picking can be quite limited. This last year we had the hardest time finding a day we could go because of the rain. When the fields are wet from rain, they seem to be closed more often.

5. SHOP IN THE MARKET STORE

Last but not least you will want to spend some time looking at all the wonderful products and produce in the store. From fresh fruits and veggies to peach cobbler and mac and cheese, you will be sure to find something that you want to try. Besides the produce and baked goods, you can buy Ham Orchard branded t-shirts and hats to help remember the day. The market store is also where you will find the peach and strawberry ice cream to purchase. It can be found near the back of the store.

Whether you’re coming for the food or the fun, Ham Orchards is a must-visit summer destination.
