Only One Day at the State Fair of Texas? Here is What I Would Do…

There are so many fun things to do at the fair it is almost impossible to fit everything in that you want to do. Because of this, I now get a season pass and visit several times throughout the season but even at that I have some favorite activities that stand out above the others. So, if I had one day to spend at the Texas State Fair these are the things I would recommend you do…

Check out the Car Show

If you are looking for a new car or just want to see the latest models from the major car manufacturers then look no further than the car show at the state fair. You can look, feel and sit in almost all of the cars and get a feel for whether you like it or not. Sometimes they even have prototypes on display of future cars that are being developed.

Watch the Pig Races

Can you really say you’ve had the full State Fair experience if you haven’t seen the pig races? The Pig Races have been a staple of the State Fair for a LONG time and I would say are a must see. If you have never gotten to experience this show then I would definitely put it on your list. This is a great activity for families as well.

Eat a Corndog, Bird Dog or Cheesy Pup

Visiting a Fletcher’s stand is a must for a complete fair experience. My favorite Fletcher’s item is the cheesy pup. Imagine melted cheese inside of corndog batter! Yum! If you want to see the differences between the different types of corn dogs you can check out this article – https://suitcasesandsalt.com/fletchers-corn-dogs-at-the-state-fair-of-texas/

Look Around in the Arts and Crafts Building (And See the Butter Sculpture)

There are so many wonderful arts and crafts that have been submitted for display by fairgoers. From quilts and paintings to pictures and canned goods there is so much to see. If you only have a few moments, you should at least take the time to step in and see the sculpture made out of butter! Where else can you see quite a site?

Sample Local Foods in the Go Texan Pavilion

The Go Texan Pavilion is a great activity to pair with the Arts and Crafts building because of how near they are to each other at fair park. In the Go Texan Pavilion you will find a small market selling local foods and products. At different times throughout the day you can also sample some of the foods for sell. Another great reason to stop in here to get a respite from the heat while you enjoy the air conditioned building.

Visit the Birthing Barn

Where are my animal lovers out there?? If that’s you, this is where you will want to be. Throughout the fair season new baby animals are born each week and you can see each of these cuties in the birthing barn making this a great family activity. If you visit the fair more than once this year make sure you go back and see more and more baby animals as they make their appearance.

See Hydroponic Grown Plants in the Greenhouse

This is a quick activity but a fun one. In the midway sits a greenhouse that grows food year around. During the fair you can see hydroponically grown plants and see how growing these plants are helping the community.

Take a walk down the Sculpture Path

Each year along the pond there are sculptures on the walking path that are made by different artists. It can be an intriguing walk to look at each one along the walkway so make sure you save a little time in your schedule to walk along this path.

Try This Years Specialty Foods

And last but not least you may want to try some of the unique foods the fair offers. Every year there is a contest to win the Big Tex award for several different food categories. Along with the winners, the finalists in this contest will also be available for purchase. Check out the list of finalists this year here – https://bigtex.com/plan-your-visit/food/. I also recommend checking out previous year’s winners  as well, as they are often still available for purchase at the fair.
