If You Want Authentic Italian Food in St. Louis, Don’t Skip This Restaurant…

Last Updated September 30, 2026

Have you ever sat down at a restaurant, ordered something that looked good on the menu and when it arrived you took a bite, only to find that it was one of the most amazing things you have ever tasted? Well, I can say that I had that happen at a quaint little restaurant on The Hill in St. Louis called Mama’s on the Hill.

My family and I love the city of St. Louis and as we were trying out new places in the city we visited a restaurant called Mama’s on the Hill. We had eaten on the Hill before but hadn’t tried this restaurant out yet. The Hill is the place you go for real Italian food. It is around 52 blocks made up of houses, delis, restaurants and bakeries. There is so much to explore. My favorite restaurant, Mama’s on the Hill, sits on the corner of Edward St. and Biscohoff Ave. and invites travelers and locals to come in, sit down and enjoy a tasty meal. From the St. Louis staple of Toasted Ravioli to many other Italian favorites, it is easy to find something you want to try.

When you choose to visit Mama’s, or any other on the Hill, you will find parking mostly along the sides of the street or sometimes in a small parking lot depending on where you are. Weekends, and especially dinner time, can make this area busy so you may have to drive around a bit to find a good place to park. One thing you will want to pay attention to as well are the signs along the side of the road telling you where you can’t park. Anytime my family and I have visited, we have been able to find parking fairly easy but depending on the time you go, you may have to park a short walk away. If you find yourself visiting on the weekend, it can also be a good idea to call ahead and put your name on the list for that day.

Now on to the food! After you sit down, your meal will start when the waiter brings bread and seasoned oil to the table for your party to enjoy. Next you will have to decide what you want to order off the menu, and let me tell you, this is no easy task with all the delicious options. When I visit Mama’s, I always order one of my Italian food go-tos – manicotti. I would love to say I’ve tried a lot of different things on the menu but after trying the manicotti, I just haven’t been able to convince myself that anything could taste better (although I’m pretty sure my sister would tell you the same thing about the red pepper ravioli). So what makes the manicotti so amazing? The sauce! On top of the tubular noodles is a sweet red sauce like no other. The red sauce is alongside a creamy white sauce in the same dish. The combination of the two feels like a happy little party is happening in your mouth with each delicious bite. (Are you hungry yet?) I have tried a few bites of the other dishes my family members have ordered and it has all been good. I don’t know that you can go wrong with whatever you choose. If you want to get a head start on looking at the menu, you can check that out HERE.

As if the food is not enough, the restaurant itself has a nice cozy atmosphere. The upstairs seating is where most individual parties will end up sitting but there is also a downstairs seating area available. When I have visited in the past, I have been mostly at lunch time and have had no problems getting seated fairly quickly. I did have to wait awhile at dinner during one of my visits, so I recommend calling ahead sometime during the morning of the day you plan to go, if you can.

Needless to say, I plan on going back to Mama’s on the Hill and enjoying that amazing Italian food and I highly recommend it to everyone wanting to find a special restaurant in this city.
